Water Buff Mechanic

The Spino's defining trait honest to god what makes this thing actually insane and not just another big carnivore is the Hydrated status effect when any part of the Spino touches water I mean literally any contact with water you get plus 50 percent melee damage and that stacks multiplicatively with your melee stat which is honestly kind of nuts tbh plus 25 percent movement speed on both land and in water which makes it feel like a completely different creature and rapid health regeneration too like you're basically eating corpses just by standing in a puddle and the buff lasts 30 seconds after leaving water so you get a solid window to clean up and honestly any water contact triggers it rivers oceans rain even shallow puddles I've seen spino mains deliberately walk through the tiniest puddle to activate the buff it's hilarious and you can tell when it's active because the sail glows blue and it looks awesome and the moment you see that blue glow you know stuff is about to die. Ngl this single mechanic is what makes the Spino my go-to river mount I've literally based my whole playstyle around finding water sources before engaging anything dangerous sometimes I drag fights toward rivers on purpose just to get the buff going and it works way more often than it probably should. So good.

Taming Strategy

Okay so for the trap setup Spinos spawn near rivers and beaches and they rarely wander far inland so build a stone gate trap near the water honestly I learned this the hard way the first time I tried to lure one far from the river it just kept going back to the water and I was chasing it around like an idiot for 20 minutes. But here's the thing you absolutely gotta lure the Spino onto land before you start your knockout. So get it on dry land first I mean completely dry not even near a puddle because the buff triggers off anything then unload with tranq darts you need about 50 tranq darts to the head for a Lv150 Spino has moderate torpor so plan for 300 to 400 narcotics to keep it down and honestly that's kinda the bare minimum if you ask me. Anyway the Spino can switch between quadrupedal stance which is faster and bipedal which does way higher damage and it usually goes bipedal when attacking which gives you a small window to exploit the slower movement during the wind-up animation so circle around during those attacks and you'll land way more headshots imo. Also the saddle is level 71 which is pretty high so you're not getting a Spino early game unless you really rush it and kinda know what you're doing but honestly the payoff is so worth it once you ride a Spino with the water buff active you'll never want to go back to a Rex for anything near water. Ever.

Combat Uses

For river patrol the Spino is honestly unmatched there's nothing even close in river systems the water buff literally makes it stronger than Rexes when it's near water I've tested this and it's not even a contest the damage output is just stupid good and you can clear entire stretches of river without breaking a sweat. Also underwater caves are another thing the Spino crushes high oxygen plus the water buff makes it better than most dedicated aquatic creatures for cave content I've cleared the hard underwater caves with a bred Spino and honestly had an easier time than with my Mosa in some spots because the Spino can walk on land sections inside the caves too which is something pure aquatics just can't do and that alone makes it worth bringing. And for boss fights the Spino is viable for any water arena boss and the water buff stacks with Yuty courage roar for some truly disgusting damage numbers I've seen 1500 plus per bite with a well bred Spino and the right buffs active which is just obscene and watching boss health bars just melt is maybe the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced in this game hands down. But on dry land without water buff the Spino is pretty mediocre tbh I wouldn't use it for inland base defense or anything that requires sustained combat far from water it's vulnerable when not hydrated and a Rex or a Theri will outclass it easily in those situations because the water buff IS the Spino and that's honestly the whole deal take it away and you're basically riding a worse Rex with a cool sail that's just sitting there doing nothing useful and stuff like that you get the idea.
