Special Abilities
The Megatherium's Insect Killer buff is what makes this thing go from "big slow sloth" to "absolute war crime against bugs." Here's how it works. Whenever a Megatherium kills any insect or arachnid (Titanomyrma, Meganeura, Araneo, Pulmonoscorpius, even Mantis), it triggers a 120-second rage buff. During this buff, the Megatherium does 250% damage to ALL targets and a whopping 375% to insects specifically. I'm not exaggerating when I say this buff completely changes the fight against the Broodmother.
A pack of Megatheriums with the Insect Killer buff active will shred through Broodmother and her Araneo spawns like they're made of paper. The buff also gives a visual indicator β the Megatherium gets these glowing red/orange eyes and looks genuinely terrifying. One thing people miss is that the buff refreshes every time you kill another bug. In the Broodmother arena where Araneos are constantly spawning, you can keep it active the entire fight.
Oh and the Megatherium also has a secondary bite attack with its right-click that does more damage but has a longer animation. Use the basic left-click for DPS, right-click for the finishing blow. It also gathers chitin and cementing paste like nobody's business β the best chitin farmer in the game besides maybe a high-melee Sabertooth.
Taming Strategy
Taming a Megatherium is a knockout tame, and the first thing you need to know is that these things are tanks. At level 150 they have around 740 base health plus whatever wild points went into it, so don't expect to drop one with a couple of tranq arrows β you're going to need a proper setup. Build a stone trap β a 2x2 with doorframes as walls, one side open with a ramp so it walks in. Lead it in with a flying mount or just aggro it on foot and run into the trap. Megatheriums are neutral by default so they won't attack unless provoked, which makes luring them easy β just punch it once and run. Once it's in the trap, circle around and close the door.
Now for the tranqing: you're looking at about 1000 base torpor, and it drains fast-ish. A longneck with tranq darts is ideal β you'll need about 14-18 darts for a level 150 depending on your weapon quality. Crossbow with tranq arrows works too but you'll need more like 30-40 arrows. Aim for the head if you can, but the hitbox is generous on these big boys so body shots work fine too.
Once it's down, you need to babysit it for a while. The torpor drain is moderate β not as bad as a Giga but you can't just walk away. Bring at least 50-100 narcotics to be safe. Superior Kibble is the best food by far β 16 kibble gets it done in about 48 minutes with near-perfect effectiveness. If you don't have Superior Kibble (which needs Baryonyx eggs), Giant Bee Honey is the next best option at 21 honey and 59 minutes. Raw Mutton is the budget choice at 33 pieces and about 58 minutes. Whatever you do, DO NOT feed it berries β it'll take 200+ mejoberries and the effectiveness tanks to like 30%. Pro tip: clear the area of other creatures before you start. Megatheriums spawn in redwoods and snow biomes, both of which are crawling with things that want to eat your unconscious tame β Thylacoleos, Dire Bears, and Yutyrannus are all common in these areas and they will absolutely ruin your day mid-tame.
Best Uses
The Broodmother boss fight is where the Megatherium truly shines, and tbh it's not even close. Bring 19 Megatheriums and a Yutyrannus for courage roar buff, and you'll absolutely melt the Broodmother on any difficulty. The key is to get that first Insect Killer buff rolling β as soon as the Broodmother spawns her Araneo minions, your Megatheriums will kill them, proc the buff, and suddenly you're doing 250% damage to everything including the boss itself. Alpha Broodmother barely lasts 2 minutes with a good Megatherium army. I've done this fight with Rexes and Therizinos and it's night and day β Megatheriums are just built for this encounter. Aim for at least 20k health and 450-500% melee on your Megatheriums before attempting Alpha. A couple of veggie cakes in each one's inventory helps with survivability too.
Outside of boss fights, the Megatherium is easily the best chitin farmer in the game. Take one into the swamp cave or any cave with lots of Araneos and Pulmonoscorpius and you'll come out with stacks upon stacks of chitin. The Insect Killer buff means you're one-shotting most bugs, and the Megatherium's wide AOE attack hits multiple targets. A 30-minute cave run can net you thousands of chitin.
It's also great for cementing paste farming β combine the chitin from cave runs with stone from a Doedicurus and you can mass-produce CP in a chemistry bench. The Megatherium also doubles as a decent berry farmer in a pinch. Its wide attack hits a lot of bushes, though it's no Bronto or Therizino for pure berry volume.
Niche trick most people don't know: the Insect Killer buff also applies to the Rhyniognatha boss on Lost Island and Fjordur. Any fight where insect-type enemies are present, the Megatherium gets that massive damage spike. It also makes taming Queen Bees way easier β kill the drone bees with the Megatherium to proc the buff, then the Queen goes down much faster. Another niche use is in the Tek Cave on The Island β tons of Meganeura in the lava section and a Megatherium with the buff active will clear them out before they become a problem for your main boss team.
Megatherium vs Other Boss Fighters
For the Broodmother specifically, nothing beats a Megatherium army. Rexes work too but you need way higher stats β we're talking 30k health and 700%+ melee to match what Megatheriums do at 20k/450%. Therizinos are another alternative since they can use veggie cakes for healing, but again, no Insect Killer buff means slower kills. The one downside to Megatheriums is that they're slower than Rexes and have bigger turning circles, so in open-world PvP or against fast-moving bosses like the Dragon, they're not ideal. They're a specialized tool β amazing against bugs and anything bug-adjacent, but for general-purpose boss fights you're better off with Rexes or Therizinos. That said, if you're on a map where the Broodmother is your first boss (which she usually is), investing in a Megatherium line early pays off massively.
Breeding Tips
Megatheriums are mammals so you're dealing with gestation, not eggs. Gestation takes about 8 hours on 1x and the baby takes almost 4 days to fully mature β yeah it's a long haul. Start breeding early. The key stats to breed for are health and melee damage β those are what matter for boss fights. Stamina and weight are secondary since you won't be riding most of them in a boss fight and weight doesn't matter in the arena. A good starting pair should have at least 7k health and 350% melee post-tame. Imprinting is huge β a fully imprinted Megatherium gets 30% bonus to damage and damage resistance when ridden by the imprinter, so if you're going to ride one in the boss fight, make sure you imprint it yourself. For the rest of the army, imprinting is still worth it for the stat boost even if you won't ride them. Keep a breeding pair safe at base and use cryopods to transport the army to the obelisk β trying to walk 19 Megatheriums across the map is a nightmare I don't wish on anyone.
Pro Tips
First tip: before you go into the Broodmother fight, take your Megatherium army into a nearby cave with bugs and kill a few to pre-proc the Insect Killer buff. The buff lasts 120 seconds so if you portal in quickly after, you'll start the fight with the damage boost already active. Small edge, but it makes a difference on Alpha.
Second tip: level oxygen on your personal Megatherium if you're doing cave runs. Some caves have water sections and the Megatherium's base oxygen is only 270 β it'll start drowning faster than you think.
Third tip: use a cryopod to transport your Megatherium in and out of caves rather than walking it through narrow passages. Its hitbox is huge and you'll spend half your time stuck on rocks.
Fourth tip: if you're farming chitin in the swamp cave, bring a gas mask or full scuba. The Megatherium doesn't take poison damage but you do, and Arthropleura spit will melt your armor in seconds.
Fifth tip: put a few points into movement speed even though it feels wrong. A 110% speed Megatherium is noticeably more usable than base speed, especially when you're trying to chase down Titanomyrma for the buff refresh.
