Complete Guide to Crystal & Silica Pearls. Everything you need to know.
Crystal spawns on mountain peaks alongside metal and honestly the volcano has the highest crystal density in the whole map it's not even close. Ankylosaurus gets a 75 percent weight reduction which is kind of insane when you're hauling hundreds of units of crystal around plus the Anky harvests way more per node than hand picking like 4 to 5 times more per swing I mean it's basically mandatory if you're farming for real and not just grabbing a few pieces for a spyglass anyway. If you're just starting out grab a pick and head to any mountain peak the crystal is literally sitting there glowing waiting for you. Caves and highland cliffs have some too but those spots are kind of scattered and harder to reach. So yeah get an Anky tame it up and you'll never have crystal problems again honestly.
Alright so for silica pearls you've got two main farming methods depending on where you are in the game. Early game without scuba gear the shallow beaches on the east coast have pearl deposits you can just walk up to and harvest with your hands it's slow but it works when you've got no other options. But the real farming method is underwater with an Anglerfish which gets a 75 percent weight reduction on pearls and harvests way more per node than you'd ever get by hand. Underwater caves are packed with pearl clusters that respawn pretty quick. Also if you're farming on the beach anyway kill every trilobite you see they drop pearls chitin and oil. That's a nice bonus when you're starting out and need a bit of everything like seriously.
Anyways as for uses crystal goes into electronics for spyglasses GPS units generators fabricators the whole tech tree basically plus you need it for window panes and Tek tier crafting so you literally never stop needing crystal. Silica pearls are the other half of the electronics recipe plus cementing paste substitute and Tek tier armor which means you're going to be farming both constantly. I mean having 2000 of each feels barely enough and you'll still be grinding every week or whatever.
Ankylosaurus is hands down the king of crystal farming with that 75 percent weight reduction and the trick most people miss is the Anky harvests way more crystal per node I'm talking like 4 to 5 times more per swing it's kind of ridiculous so dump points into melee damage for your Anky and you're golden.
For silica pearls the Anglerfish is the obvious pick with its 75 percent weight reduction but a lot of players sleep on the Dunkleosteus for pearl runs it gets good pearl yield and can actually defend itself against megalodons. Something the Anglerfish absolutely cannot do so I've found that using a Baryonyx to clear the area first then switching to your Anglerfish for harvesting saves a ton of headaches ngl. Oh also remember that taming a high level Anky early pays off massively cause the base melee stat determines how much crystal you get per swing and breeding for melee mutations is super worth it if you plan on doing serious base building.
Best Locations, Efficiency Tips & Common Mistakes
The volcano area around coordinates 60 50 is basically crystal heaven there are rich crystal nodes scattered all over the caldera rim and inside the crater itself. You can pull 300 plus crystal in about 10 minutes with a decent Anky up there it's honestly the best spot in the game. Just watch out because the volcano has a nasty habit of spawning rexes and allosauruses near the crater so don't go up there naked or you'll be someone's lunch before you even swing your pickaxe anyway.
The central mountain around 40 55 is a safer bet for mid game players fewer predators but also fewer nodes maybe 15 to 20 rich nodes total it's a trade off between safety and efficiency you get the idea.
For silica pearls the underwater caves along the western coast near 15 45 have dense pearl clusters and the trilobite beaches on the east coast around 70 20 are perfect for early game when you don't have scuba gear yet. Plus IMO the best balanced spot is the shallow reef north of herbivore island around 85 15 you get decent pearls without going super deep and the megalodon spawns are pretty manageable there so it's my go to spot when farming solo.
Anyway for efficiency always bring a flyer that can carry your Anky the Argentavis is the classic choice since it can pick up an Ankylosaurus in its beak and it has 50 percent weight reduction on metal and crystal which stacks nicely with the Anky's own reduction. Then the rotation is dead simple fly to a mountain drop the Anky harvest everything load the crystal onto the Argy fly home repeat. You can clear three mountains in about 30 minutes this way and come back with 800 plus crystal easy but here's a trick people overlook using a whip to move encumbered dinos if your Anky gets too heavy to walk whip it toward your Argy instead of doing the painful inventory shuffle one stack at a time. That literally halves your farming time no joke.
Also for pearl farming bring multiple scuba tanks seriously nothing sucks more than running out of oxygen with 200 pearls in your inventory at the bottom of the ocean. I've done that and it's honestly devastating ugh so use Lazarus Chowder too it dramatically reduces oxygen consumption and stacks with scuba gear letting you stay down there for like 30 minutes with both active anyways tame a couple of Ichthyosaurus early on they're quick water mounts that make pearl runs way faster. You can cover way more ground in way less time it's like night and day difference honestly. Honestly the biggest mistake I see new players make is flying straight to the volcano with zero preparation they get there harvest 50 crystal and then a rex spawns behind them kills their only flyer and now they're stuck on top of a mountain with no way down and a bunch of crystal they can't use it's honestly tragic so always scope out the area first kill or kite away threats and park your flyer somewhere safe.
Another classic blunder is forgetting to check your flyer's weight before loading it up if your bird hits its weight cap mid flight you're both going down. For silica pearls the number one noob trap is diving too deep without checking your oxygen you get greedy see one more pearl cluster swim down and then you realize you have 3 seconds of air left and you're 40 meters down dead. Just mark good spots with a GPS and come back with proper gear but one more thing don't put all your crystal in one box spread it across multiple storage boxes I literally do this with every resource now after learning the hard way.
