Key Features
Honestly the thing that makes the Stego so good is the three plate modes you switch with the C key and it completely changes what this dino does in Sharp mode you get bonus damage plus a bleed effect and it becomes your primary gathering mode for berries and thatch and honestly the tail swipe in Sharp mode gathers exceptional berries faster than pretty much anything except a Therizino ngl it's kind of stupid how efficient it is then you've got Hard plate mode which gives you 40 percent damage reduction plus an aggro taunt and this is the tank mode that makes the Stego the undisputed king of bullet soaking in PvP raids I've soaked thousands of turret bullets with a Hard plate Stego and it just doesn't die tbh it's almost unfair. And then there's Hearty mode for transport which gives you bonus weight and health regeneration so you can carry way more stuff and heal up between fights and basically never have to stop moving it's honestly one of those things that once you start using the plate modes properly you wonder how you ever played without a Stego. Worth it.
Strategy Guide
For resource farming honestly just park your Stego in Sharp plate mode next to some berry bushes and go to town the tail swing gathers about 3 times faster than a Trike and I've literally filled entire storage boxes with narcoberries in like 15 minutes of farming with a decent melee Stego you can produce bulk narcotics at a rate that actually makes narcotics crafting the bottleneck not the berry supply which is kind of a funny problem to have. But the real magic is PvP soaking with Hard plate mode and an Ascendant saddle a properly bred Stego can absorb over 10 thousand turret bullets before you even need to think about healing and experienced raiders bring multiple Stegos and rotate them through while the others regen I mean it's literally the number one soaking mount in the game and nothing else even comes close. So for boss fighting the Stego isn't top tier honestly but it's useful for Broodmother since Sharp plate bleed stacks help whittle her down and Hard plate keeps your Stego alive through the spider adds and stuff like that just don't expect it to carry a boss fight the way a Rex line would you get the idea it's a support role not a carry role
Detailed Taming Strategy
Stegos are slow so taming them is pretty straightforward if you know what you're doing the simplest trap is a 2x2 stone foundation with doorframes on all sides just kite the stego in run out through a gap and close it off with a final wall and honestly you can even use wood if you're early game stegos don't hit that hard. For weapons a crossbow with tranq arrows works fine aim for the head for maximum torpor if you've got a longneck even better but it's kinda overkill for a stego bring about 30 tranq arrows for a 150 maybe 40 if your aim is garbage like mine sometimes the stego has decent torpor so you won't need a ton of narcotics a stack of 50 narcotics is more than enough even on 1x rates. But one thing I've learned the hard way clear the area before you start taming stegos spawn near raptors and carnos a lot and nothing sucks more than losing a 150 stego because a pack of raptors showed up while you were waiting for the tame to finish so build a spike wall perimeter around your trap it takes two minutes and saves a ton of frustration trust me on this one I've been there and it's the worst feeling honestly
Stego vs The Competition
So how does the stego stack up against other early-game herbivores let me break it down compared to the Trike the stego is just better at pretty much everything except the saddle level requirement Trike saddle is level 16 stego is 26 and that ten level gap matters early game but once you hit 26 there's basically no reason to keep a Trike around for gathering the stego gathers more berries fights better and has way more utility with the plate modes. The Anky is a different story Anky is still the metal king nothing beats it for metal and flint stego can't compete there but for berries thatch and general utility stego wins and I've found that a good stego can replace both a Trike and a low-level berry gatherer in one tame which saves time and base space. Against the Therizino the stego loses on pure gathering speed Theri is faster at berry and fiber collection but the stego is way easier to tame way easier to find and the plate modes give it versatility the Theri doesn't have for most players a stego is the practical choice until you're ready for the Theri taming headache and honestly the Theri tame is such a pain that I stuck with my stego for way longer than I probably needed to and never really regretted it
Pro Tips
Here's something most guides don't mention the stego's plate modes actually affect the rider too not just the dino in Hard mode you take reduced damage as the rider so if you're getting sniped in PvP switching to Hard plate can save your life even if you're not dismounted and I've literally survived sniper fire that should have killed me just by remembering to switch plates at the right moment it's one of those tiny details that separates the stego mains from everyone else
For berry farming efficiency park your stego right in the middle of a dense berry patch and spam the tail attack don't bother walking around the AoE is big enough and always use Sharp mode for gathering obviously but here's the trick switch to Hearty mode for the walk back to base the extra weight and regen means you carry more and arrive with full health and honestly it sounds like a small optimization but over hundreds of farming runs it adds up to so much time saved I wish I'd figured this out sooner. Another thing stego eggs are used for Superior Kibble which tames a bunch of useful stuff like Allosaurus Argentavis and Dire Bear so even if you don't use the stego much day to day having a breeding pair for eggs is absolutely worth it imo
Common Mistakes
The biggest mistake I see new players make is forgetting which plate mode they're in you go into a fight thinking you're in Hard mode but you left it on Sharp from farming and now you're taking way more damage than expected always double check your mode before engaging anything dangerous I've died this way more times than I want to admit and it never stops being embarrassing. Another classic is putting all levels into melee and ignoring weight yeah the stego has decent base weight but if you're using it as a farming mount you need weight I usually go 60 percent melee and 40 percent weight with maybe a few points in health if I use it for PvP soaking a stego with 500 melee and 300 weight is gonna farm way more efficiently than one with 900 melee and base weight simply because you won't have to run back to base every three minutes. And don't bother bringing a stego to boss fights expecting it to carry it's not a boss fighter and honestly the only boss it's useful for is Broodmother and even then there are much better options use the stego for what it's good at farming soaking and transport don't try to make it something it's not I mean you can but your mileage may vary and you'll probably be disappointed honestly
Best Uses (PvE and PvP)
So where does the stego really shine in PvE it's your go-to berry and thatch machine and I've found that a single stego run through a dense forest zone can net you more narcoberries than five Trike runs combined it's honestly not even close and the best part is you don't need to micromanage it park the stego switch to Sharp mode and just go to town swinging that tail you'll fill a storage box with berries in like ten minutes flat ngl it's kind of ridiculous. For PvP the stego is pretty much the undisputed king of bullet soaking Hard plate mode with a capped Ascendant saddle can tank thousands of turret rounds before you even need to think about healing experienced raiders bring multiple stegos to rotate through while the others regen and here's something most people don't realize the stego's tail swing in Sharp mode actually applies a bleed that ignores armor so if some guy on a managarmr is zipping around your FOB being annoying a few tail hits will make him regret it basically it's a tank that can also fight back which is kinda rare in ARK and honestly that's why I love this dino so much
One more thing for PvE stegos are weirdly good for taming other creatures their knockback tail swing keeps smaller predators off your tranq target while you're waiting for it to fall honestly I bring a stego to almost every mid-game tame now it's not as fast as a flyer but the protection and extra carry weight make the whole process way smoother and I've saved so many tranq targets from getting eaten by random raptors just by having my stego parked next to me swinging that tail like a bodyguard it's honestly one of those things that once you try it you'll never go back to taming without backup
Breeding Tips
Taming a breeding pair of stegos is honestly one of the best investments you can make in the mid-game the eggs are used for Superior Kibble and Superior Kibble tames a ton of useful creatures so even if you never ride the babies having a steady egg supply is worth the effort of setting up a breeding operation anyway here's what I've learned from breeding way too many stegos over the years
For incubation stego eggs like it warm you're looking at around 32 to 34 degrees Celsius so if you're on a map like Scorched Earth or Ragnarok you can pretty much just leave the eggs on the ground during daytime and they'll hatch on cooler maps you'll need a few standing torches or a basic air conditioner setup the incubation time is about 2 hours and 33 minutes on official rates so you've got plenty of time to go do other stuff while you wait. The baby phase is about 6 hours which isn't too bad compared to some of the bigger herbivores they eat berries obviously and mejoberries work fine for imprinting the real question is what mutations to target and honestly I think melee damage is the most impactful for a general-purpose stego more melee means more berries per swing and more damage when you need to fight after melee go for health if you're building a soaker or weight if it's your farming mount stamina mutations are kind of a waste on stegos because their stamina pool is already decent and the tail swing doesn't use much
One breeding trick I stumbled into if you stack three or four health mutations on a Hard plate stego you can use it to tank wild gigas in a pinch the damage reduction from Hard plate plus the high health pool means it can take several giga bites before going down it's not a permanent solution or anything but it's saved my base more than once when a wild giga decided to pay a visit and my turrets weren't quite ready and getting mutations stacked isn't that hard if you're already breeding for eggs anyway so you basically get a free emergency tank out of the same bloodline which is honestly such a good deal
Advanced Taming Setups
Okay so the basic 2x2 stone trap works fine but if you want to do this properly there are some setups that make the whole thing way less stressful my personal favorite is the ramp trap build a 3x3 stone foundation put doorframes two high on three sides and on the fourth side build a ramp going up from the ground to the top of the doorframes the stego walks up the ramp drops into the box and can't get out it's that simple and unlike the basic cage where you have to close a wall behind them the ramp trap means you never have to be on the same side of the trap as the stego you just aggro it run up the ramp yourself it follows you in and you slip out through a doorframe clean and safe and I've literally never lost a stego using this method
For weapons if you're on a budget just use a crossbow with tranq arrows and aim for the body the stego's head hitbox can be a little wonky sometimes honestly I've had better luck just pumping arrows into its side the torpor per shot is slightly lower but you'll miss way fewer shots which kind of evens out in the end if you've got the resources a longneck rifle with shocking tranq darts is obviously the fastest method but again it's really overkill for a stego save your darts for stuff like Therizinos and Rexes that actually fight back hard. Torpor management is pretty relaxed with stegos their torpor drops slowly enough that you only need to check on them every five minutes or so once they're down bring maybe 80 narcotics for a 150 on 1x rates and you'll have plenty left over but here's the thing people mess up don't put all the narcotics in at once feed them in small batches as the torpor drops to around half if you dump all 80 in at full torpor you're wasting a bunch because the torpor gain caps out just keep an eye on it and top it off as needed and always bring a few extra stacks of mejoberries in case some griefer shows up and you need to bail out and come back later a stego with food in its inventory won't starve for a long time so you can leave it and return when the area is clear you get the idea
Survivor's Field Notes
Here are a few things I've picked up that most guides won't tell you first the stego's platform saddle isn't just for PvP cheese in PvE you can build a mobile taming pen on the back of a stego stick a generator a fridge full of kibble and a few storage boxes up there and you've got a self-contained taming rig that goes wherever you need it it's honestly kind of ridiculous how useful this is once you get used to it I've tamed entire packs of wolves without ever returning to base and it felt like cheating honestly
Second if you're farming thatch specifically the stego in Sharp mode is actually one of the best thatch gatherers in the game most people think of the Mammoth or the Therizino for thatch but a high melee stego can strip entire forests in minutes and since you're also getting berries at the same time you're basically running two farming operations at once it's one of those things that sounds inefficient until you actually try it and then you wonder why you ever used anything else. Third don't sleep on the stego's knockback the tail swing sends smaller creatures flying which means you can basically stunlock raptors direwolves and even carnos if you time your swings right it's not flashy but it works and in my experience a stego with decent melee can solo an entire raptor pack without taking a single hit if you manage the knockback well just keep swinging and they'll never touch you
And finally if you're on a PvP server and you see someone riding a stego in Hearty mode with a full platform build just leave them alone they've probably got way more hours in this game than you do and they know exactly what they're doing the stego is the kind of creature where an experienced player can do things that look like cheating but are really just thousands of hours of game knowledge respect the stego mains basically and all that
