🌊 Water Base

ARK 2 Underwater Base Building, Complete Ocean Base Guide

Look underwater bases are honestly the best natural defense in ARK 2 and I've died enough times to surface raids to know what I'm talking about here because most raiders can't operate effectively underwater period and that alone makes an ocean base worth the headache of building it and maintaining it and dealing with all the oxygen logistics and stuff like that. So build your ocean fortress with these proven designs and location picks and you'll sleep a lot better at night knowing your stuff is 200 meters below the surface where most people won't bother looking honestly I've been building underwater bases pretty much since I figured out how oxygen works in this game and the peace of mind is unmatched tbh.

Underwater Base Building, Complete Ocean Base Guide

Underwater bases offer the best natural defense in ARK 2 because most raiders can't operate effectively underwater and building your ocean fortress with these proven designs and location picks will honestly change how you play the game and once you go underwater you'll never want to build on land again you know what I mean. The peace of mind is just that good like knowing that 90% of the server population won't even attempt to raid you because they'd need scuba gear and an aquatic tame and most people can't be bothered with all that extra prep work and honestly that's exactly what you want in a survival game base.

Best Ocean Base Locations

So let me break down the locations I've actually tested and lost bases at so you don't have to learn the hard way like I did because I've lost probably 4 or 5 underwater bases before getting the formula right and each failure taught me something different about what works and what doesn't and what's just a terrible idea from the start. Herbivore Island Bay has shallow water nearby metal spawns moderate predator density and it's basically the best for solo or small tribe ocean bases accessible from southern beaches and you don't need anything fancy to get started and honestly this is where I built my first underwater base and it's still my favorite spot for early game when you don't have scuba gear yet. Then there's Deep Sea Trench Plateau with deep water that hides your base from aerial scouts and nearby black pearl and oil deposits but it requires scuba gear for construction so this is a high-end location for when you're already established because the resource access is amazing but the build process is kind of a nightmare without proper gear and I nearly drowned like three times setting mine up which was honestly terrifying. Underwater Cave Entrances are natural chokepoints and you can block entrances with behemoth gates making the interior fully protected this is best for alpha tribe underwater bases where you want absolute security and don't mind the cramped space though the interior room isn't huge so you need to be smart about layout and storage and all that. And Sunken Ship Wrecks are aesthetic and defensible you can build inside or around wreckage with limited space but excellent camouflage like raiders literally swim past you and don't notice the base because it blends into the wreck and that's pretty cool honestly. Those are the main spots but there are other hidey holes and random crevices and underwater plateau ledges you can find if you explore enough like there's this one spot near the southern reef that almost nobody knows about and it's perfect for a compact solo base etc. you just gotta spend some time swimming around with a dolphin or whatever.

Construction & Defense

Here's the thing about underwater construction that nobody tells you upfront and I had to figure out through trial and error and a lot of drowning deaths, each room needs its own airlock because a single breach shouldn't flood the entire base and use Tek generators for oxygen if possible because running out of air while building is one of the most frustrating ways to die and I've done it more times than I want to admit and it's always when you're 90% done with a wall placement and then suddenly you're dead and all your materials are at the bottom of the ocean. For turret placement cover all approach angles because aquatic creatures approach from any direction not just ground level like on land and Plant Species X underwater slows attackers and it's honestly underrated for underwater defense most people forget about it but it works surprisingly well against aquatic mounts. Behemoth gates make excellent underwater walls because they're cheaper than Tek walls and have high HP and you should layer 2-3 gates for redundancy and you'll be amazed at how much punishment they can take seriously these things are tanky against everything except high-level Mosas. And here's my absolute favorite tip park 5+ dunkleosteus or megalodons around the perimeter set to aggressive with a tusoteuthis for deep ocean patrol because I've had a tuso literally grab raiders off their mounts and drag them into the depths and it never gets old it's honestly one of the most satisfying things in the game watching a would-be raider get yanked off their mount and disappear into the darkness. Also don't forget about creature whistles and group management because your guard dinos will chase stuff forever if you let them and you need to set their follow distance short and their aggression range reasonable or they'll wander off and you'll come back to an empty perimeter with all your guard dinos scattered across the map chasing a random Coelacanth or whatever. The whole defense setup takes time to dial in but once it's working your underwater base is basically a fortress that most players won't even attempt to crack and the few who do try will regret it when they run out of oxygen halfway through the engagement and start panicking, it's basically a natural timer that works in your favor and it's beautiful honestly.
