ARK 2 doesn't hold your hand at all you literally wake up on a beach with nothing and within five minutes you'll probably be eaten by a Raptor or frozen to death or starving and I've been there so many times it's honestly kind of funny looking back but these tips compress hundreds of hours of hard learned lessons into a practical survival guide for your first week and I wish someone had told me this stuff when I started because I died like 30 times on my first day and it was miserable ngl so here's what I've figured out after way too many hours in this game
Day 1: Don't Die (Often)
So the first thing is spawn in the easy zones the southern and eastern beach spawns have the lowest predator density and avoid the north and any area with snow in the description until you have fur armor because I made that mistake once and literally froze to death within 3 minutes and it was so dumb. Also you need to immediately craft a Stone Pick punch a tree for 2 thatch plus 1 wood pick up a stone from the ground and craft the pick and do not punch trees for wood beyond this because that's just a waste of time honestly. Then pick bushes not trees for berries because berries are your early food and water source and narcoberries the black ones are especially important combined with spoiled meat in a Mortar and Pestle to make Narcotics and you'll need a ton of those later trust me. Also kill Dodos for meat and hide they're harmless and abundant and cook meat on a Campfire immediately because raw meat spoils in 10 minutes while cooked meat lasts 30 minutes and I've wasted so much meat from not cooking it fast enough. And build a thatch 1x1 with a bed a Sleeping Bag is a one time respawn point but upgrade to a Simple Bed as soon as possible for permanent respawn and place the bed indoors because I've spawned on a bed that was outside and got immediately eaten by a Raptor and that's just the worst feeling ever. Also stay near your corpse because your inventory drops where you die and decays in roughly 15 minutes and you gotta rush back to recover your gear and honestly the number of times I've lost full metal tool sets this way is embarrassing. And for the love of everything don't fight anything bigger than a Dilo on day one just run from Raptors Carnos and anything with glowing eyes at night because you will lose every single time and I've learned this lesson the hard way multiple times
Day 2-3: Establish Yourself
So craft a Bola within the first hour it immobilizes small to medium creatures for 30 seconds and this single item will save your life more than any weapon and I always keep at least 3 on my hotbar because you never know when a Raptor is gonna jump you. Also tame a Parasaurolophus as your first tame just Bola it and feed it mejoberries a Parasaur carries weight gathers berries efficiently and its honk scares small predators and it's honestly the best starter tame in the game imo. And build near metal your first permanent base should be within walking distance of at least 3 metal nodes because metal tools are 3x more efficient than stone and I built my first base way too far from metal and regretted it so much. Also craft Narcotics constantly you need hundreds for tranquilizer arrows and here's a trick split your meat stack to spoil faster by placing raw meat in stacks of 1 to maximize spoilage rate and you'll have spoiled meat for days. And upgrade to a crossbow as soon as you can because the crossbow fires tranquilizer arrows underwater and deals more torpor per shot than the bow and it's a priority engram at level 25. Then get airborne a Pteranodon saddle unlocks at level 38 and being able to fly transforms the game you can scout resources find tames and escape danger with ease and honestly once you get your first flyer you'll wonder how you ever played without one and it's kind of magical the first time you take off
Day 4-7: Build Real Infrastructure
So build stone structures stone is the minimum viable base material because wood can be destroyed by basic tools but stone requires explosives or high level tames to breach and I've had a wood base get completely wiped overnight and it was devastating and I never made that mistake again. Also tame an Ankylosaurus and Doedicurus these two creatures automate resource gathering the Anky for metal and flint the Doed for stone and together they cut gathering time by 80 percent and honestly they're game changers. And start a crop plot for Narcoberries a medium crop plot producing narcoberries near your base eliminates gathering runs for taming supplies and it's basically free narcotics once it's set up. Also build a taming pen a 2x2 stone pen with doorframes and a ramp is the universal design you just lure creatures in and tranquilize them from outside with zero risk and I've used this design for literally every dangerous tame I've ever done. And craft a Refining Forge or two smelting metal is slow and two Refining Forges let you process metal while doing other tasks and I always fill them before logging off so I come back to a pile of ingots. Also organize your storage with dedicated boxes for metal ingots stone wood hide fiber narcotics and blueprints and label them and organization saves more time than any single game mechanic and I'm not even exaggerating tbh. Then tame a utility flyer the Argentavis reduces the weight of metal stone and crystal by 50 percent in its inventory and combined with its high base weight it's the ultimate resource transport and it's honestly the most important tame in the game
Essential Knowledge
Fortitude matters a lot put 20 points into Fortitude early because it increases your resistance to heat cold and torpor meaning you get knocked out less and survive more environments and I used to skip Fortitude and got knocked out constantly and it sucked. Also movement speed saves lives 130 percent movement speed lets you outrun Raptors and 150 percent lets you outrun most land predators and do not neglect this stat because I've died so many times just because I was too slow to get away. And carry bolas always 3 bolas in your hotbar at all times Raptor ambush Bola surprise Troodon Bola aggressive player on a PvP server Bola them or their mount and I swear by this rule and never go anywhere without bolas. Also night is dangerous Troodons spawn more frequently at night and their bite applies torpor and they'll knock you out and eat you so stay indoors or carry Stimberries to counter torpor and I've lost full kits to Troodons at night more times than I can count. Also join a tribe ARK scales exponentially with cooperation even a tribe of 2 to 3 can accomplish in a weekend what takes a solo player weeks plus tribe shared XP means passive leveling while others craft and hunt and honestly playing solo is kind of a different game entirely and I much prefer tribe play
