so your first few hours in ARK 2 honestly determine whether you thrive or become someone else's dinner and I've been on both sides of that equation tbh and choosing the right starter dinosaurs can literally transform the early game from a desperate struggle into a methodical progression and this guide ranks the 10 best early game tames with spawn locations and taming requirements and exactly how each creature changes your survival strategy and I mean getting this right makes the game so much more fun imo
Raptor — Your First Combat Mount
so the Raptor is honestly the quintessential first combat tame and it's fast and reasonably tough and capable of taking down most early game threats in a pack of 2 to 3 and raptors spawn commonly in grasslands and forests across all starting zones and you tame them with raw meat and a Bola to immobilize because the Bola is essential since raptors are fast and aggressive and once tamed a Raptor pack gives you the mobility to scout dangerous areas and the firepower to defend yourself against most predators short of a T Rex and I've literally survived so many situations just because I had a raptor pack with me
Parasaurolophus — Early Resource Hauler
and the Parasaur is often overlooked because it's not a fighter but honestly it's one of the most useful early tames and it gathers berries at 3 times the rate of hand picking making narcotic production trivial and its weight capacity at base 480 makes it an excellent pack mule for metal and stone runs and the honk ability scares off small predators like Dilophosaurus and Compys and I love that honk it's saved me so many times and you tame with mejoberries and a Bola and a level 20 Parasaur takes about 15 minutes with mejoberries which is pretty fast tbh
Triceratops — The Early Game Tank
but the Trike is the first dinosaur that lets you fight back against mid tier predators and its charge attack deals significant knockback and its head takes 80 percent reduced damage so face your enemy and you're nearly invulnerable to frontal attacks and trikes excel at berry gathering better than Parasaurs for narcoberries and can carry substantial weight and you tame with mejoberries or crops and the key strategy is shoot from elevation or use a Bola if the server allows larger dinos to be bola'd and honestly the Trike is kind of my go to when I need to feel safe in the early game
Pteranodon — Your Ticket to the Sky
and flight literally changes everything in ARK and the Pteranodon is the earliest accessible flyer and while it's fragile it opens up the entire map and you can scout resource rich areas and locate caves and find base locations and escape ground threats with ease and it spawns along beaches and inland areas and you tame with raw meat using a Bola before it takes off and the low health at base 210 means you must avoid combat and the Pteranodon is a scout and transport not a fighter and I mean once you get your first flyer the whole game feels different and it's awesome
Ankylosaurus — The Metal Miner
once you have a flyer or a strong ground mount the Ankylosaurus becomes your most important economic tame and it gathers metal and flint and crystal and obsidian at 4 to 6 times the rate of hand tools and metal is the gateway to advanced tools and weapons and structures and it spawns in mountain and volcano regions and you tame with mejoberries or kibble and it's slow on land but the value per tame is incredible and I kind of feel naked without an anky in my lineup tbh
Honorable Mentions
and for honorable mentions the Moschops at number 6 is a passive tame with random food requests and it's an excellent early fiber and berry gatherer with no saddle required and the Carbonemys at number 7 is a living tank with high health and natural armor and it's great for soaking turrets in PvP and storing resources and the Dilophosaurus at number 8 is an easy early tame that spits venom blinding enemies and it's good in packs of 4 to 6 and the Iguanodon at number 9 is fast with infinite stamina in quadrupedal mode and it's an excellent berry and seed gatherer and the Stegosaurus at number 10 is slower than a Trike but better at berry gathering and can impale enemies with its tail and honestly these are all solid picks depending on what you need etc
so prioritize mobility first with a Raptor or Pteranodon and then resource gathering with an Anky or Trike and a good early game progression goes Parasaur for berries and transport then Raptor for combat and speed then Pteranodon for flight and scouting then Ankylosaurus for metal and industrial scaling and that's pretty much the path I follow every time I start fresh and it never lets me down honestly
