so I've been obsessively tracking every ARK 2 creature reveal since the first cinematic trailer dropped and I've gone through every community crunch every dev interview every screenshot and every leaked gameplay frame to compile this list and honestly it's grown way bigger than I expected and Studio Wildcard has confirmed over 150 tamable species with the new AI system making each one behave differently in the wild and this is the most comprehensive ARK 2 dinosaur list you're going to find anywhere right now and yes I've included every creature from ARK 1 that's been confirmed as returning plus all the brand new species that have been revealed because there are some genuinely wild new additions that nobody's really talking about yet
and the way I've organized this is by creature type and spawn biome so you can quickly find what lives where and then I break down the taming method diet combat tier and any special abilities because in ARK 2 the special abilities are way more important than raw stats and a creature with pack hunting AI or migration awareness or a unique gathering bonus can completely change your progression path and I think the creature abilities are the single most important thing to understand about ARK 2 because they fundamentally change which dinos are worth taming and when
Carnivores — The Predators That Will Hunt You (And Fight For You)
Tyrannosaurus Rex
the king is back and confirmed and honestly nothing beats the feeling of your first Rex tame and in ARK 2 the Rex has improved AI that makes wild ones actually hunt in patrol patterns instead of wandering aimlessly and they respond to sound now so gunfire and explosions can attract them from further away and the base stats are slightly lower than ARK 1 at 1000 health and 62 base damage but the roar ability now debuffs enemy creatures reducing their damage by 15 percent for 20 seconds and that's actually huge for boss fights and it spawns in mountain regions and grasslands and tames with exceptional kibble or raw mutton and it's a knockout tame with a 2 hour timer on official rates and honestly it's still the apex predator and you need one
Giganotosaurus
the Giga is confirmed returning and it's terrifying and wild ones have the rage mechanic where taking too much damage too fast sends them into a frenzy with massively increased damage output and in ARK 2 the rage threshold is higher meaning they're harder to enrage which makes wild Gigas more dangerous but tamed ones more reliable and they spawn near mountains and volcano edges and taming one requires a metric ton of tranq darts and narcotics and the torpor drain is insane so bring at least 500 narcotics and honestly bring 1000 to be safe and the base health is around 80000 wild but tamed drops to about 17000 and the melee is 480 base which is still the highest in the game
Spinosaurus
the Spino gets a complete rework in ARK 2 with amphibious AI that lets it seamlessly transition between land and water hunting and it gets a hydration buff that increases damage by 20 percent and speed by 25 percent for 30 seconds after entering water and this makes it an incredible swamp and river zone mount and it spawns in rivers swamps and coastal areas and tames with exceptional kibble via knockout and the bipedal stance switching is automatic now based on terrain and honestly the Spino might be the best mid game general purpose mount in ARK 2 because of this versatility and I'm genuinely excited about the rework
Raptor
the Raptor now has actual pack AI where a group of 3 or more coordinates attacks and the alpha Raptor gets a howl buff that increases pack damage by 25 percent and speed by 15 percent for 10 seconds and wild packs will circle and flank instead of just running straight at you and they spawn in grasslands and forests everywhere and you tame with raw meat and a Bola and they're still the best early game combat mount and honestly the new pack behavior makes them way scarier to fight and way more fun to use
Carnotaurus
the Carno gets a charge attack in ARK 2 that deals bonus damage based on speed and distance traveled and it can knock back smaller creatures on impact and it spawns in grasslands and forests and tames with regular kibble and it's a solid mid tier carnivore with 420 base health and 35 base damage and the charged headbutt does like 50 percent extra damage at full speed and it's surprisingly good for hit and run tactics
Allosaurus
the Allosaurus pack mechanic is upgraded in ARK 2 and the alpha Allosaurus applies a bleeding debuff with its bite that does 5 percent of the target's max health over 5 seconds and stacks up to 3 times and a pack of 3 or more Allos with an alpha can take down almost anything including wild Rexes with the bleed stacking and they spawn in mountain and forest zones and tame with regular kibble via knockout and honestly an Allo pack is one of the most efficient hunting setups in the game and the bleed damage works on bosses though at reduced effectiveness
Baryonyx
the Baryonyx specializes in fish hunting and its tail spin attack stuns aquatic creatures for 3 seconds in ARK 2 and it's fast on land and faster in water with the hydration speed buff and it spawns in swamps and rivers and tames with regular kibble and fish meat is more effective for taming than regular meat and it's the ideal cave diver for water adjacent caves because it handles both environments so well
Therizinosaurus
the tickle chicken is back and still terrifying and in ARK 2 it gets a harvesting mode toggle where you switch between combat claws and gathering claws and in gathering mode it harvests fiber wood thatch berries and hide at insane rates making it the best solo farming mount in the game and it spawns in forests and jungles and tames with exceptional kibble and its torpor drain is fast so you need lots of narcotics and honestly the Therizino is one of those creatures where the effort to tame it pays back tenfold because one Therizino replaces like five different gathering dinos and it can also fight Rexes and win so there's that
Herbivores — The Farmers, Haulers, and Tanks
Brontosaurus
the Bronto is still the biggest herbivore in the game and in ARK 2 it gets a stomp attack that does AOE damage in a radius around it and gathers berries and fiber in massive quantities per swing and the platform saddle returns so you can build a mobile base on its back and it spawns in grasslands and forests and tames with exceptional kibble or mejoberries and it takes forever to tame on berries but it's passive and safe because nothing really messes with a wild Bronto and honestly the platform saddle base building is one of the most fun creative aspects of ARK and I'm glad it's back
Triceratops
the Trike charge attack now does knockback and applies a short stun to smaller creatures and its head damage reduction is 80 percent and it's the best early game tank and berry gatherer and it spawns in grasslands near water and tames with mejoberries and the charge can break through trees and rocks clearing paths and honestly it's my go to second tame after a Parasaur in basically every playthrough because it makes you feel safe and the berry gathering is way better than hand picking
Stegosaurus
the Stego gets plate modes in ARK 2 with hardened mode reducing incoming damage by 50 percent from the front and sides and the tail swipe impales smaller creatures and applies bleed and it's a great berry gatherer and it spawns in forests and grasslands and tames with mejoberries and it's slow but the damage reduction in hardened mode makes it surprisingly good at soaking turrets in PvP and honestly it's underrated and most people skip it for Trikes but the Stego is better at pure defense
Ankylosaurus
the Anky is still the king of metal gathering with the same 4x to 6x metal collection rate and in ARK 2 its tail attack also gathers crystal obsidian and flint at boosted rates and it spawns in mountain and volcano regions and tames with mejoberries or regular kibble and it's slow but the resource output per swing is unmatched and you basically need an Anky if you want to progress past stone tier and it's not optional and honestly it's the first dinosaur you should tame once you have a flyer because metal is the gateway to everything
Doedicurus
the Doedicurus is the stone gathering specialist and it collects stone at 4x rate and its roll ability lets it move fast in ball form and in ARK 2 the roll does minor damage to small creatures and it spawns in mountain and forest zones and tames with mejoberries and you want one early for stone and sand gathering and building and paired with an Anky for metal you've got your resource economy sorted
Mammoth
the Mammoth is the wood gathering king and it collects wood at 4x rate and has a weight reduction for wood carrying it at 25 percent of the normal weight and in ARK 2 it gets a trunk sweep that gathers thatch and fiber as well and it spawns in snow and tundra biomes and tames with mejoberries and it's tanky with good health and honestly the wood weight reduction alone makes the Mammoth worth taming because wood is heavy and you need a lot of it for building and without the weight reduction you're doing triple the trips
Castoroides
the giant beaver is back and it's the best wood gatherer in terms of pure speed and its dam locations in swamps are excellent cementing paste sources and in ARK 2 it gets an improved swimming speed and can build dam structures near your base that generate cementing paste over time which is an insane quality of life feature and it spawns in rivers and swamps and tames with gallimimus kibble and honestly passive cementing paste generation from a tamed beaver is huge and I would tame one just for that
Flyers — Your Ticket to the Sky
Pteranodon
the Ptera is the earliest accessible flyer and it's fast and fragile and in ARK 2 it has improved barrel roll damage that scales with speed and it spawns on beaches and coastal areas and tames with raw meat using a Bola and it's your scout transport and first flight experience and it can't carry much weight but it's fast and getting one changes the entire game because suddenly the map opens up and you can go anywhere and see everything and honestly flight is the biggest power spike in ARK and the Ptera is your first taste of it
Argentavis
the Argy is the mid game flyer upgrade and it has weight reduction for metal crystal obsidian and stone making it the ultimate hauling bird and in ARK 2 it gets a grab attack that can pick up medium sized creatures and it spawns in mountain regions and tames with raw mutton or regular kibble and it's tankier than a Ptera with 365 base health and 400 base weight and the weight reduction is 50 percent for metal and it's the workhorse of the skies and honestly once you have an Argy your Ptera becomes obsolete for everything except pure speed scouting
Quetzalcoatlus
the Quetz is the endgame flyer with the platform saddle and massive weight capacity and in ARK 2 it gets improved stamina and the platform saddle can support more structures and it spawns rarely near mountain peaks and tames with exceptional kibble and it's a massive pain to tame solo because it never lands and you either need a friend to carry you while you tranq it or use the grappling hook method which is terrifying and difficult and honestly solo taming a Quetz is one of the hardest things in ARK but worth it because a Quetz platform base is the ultimate mobile fortress
Wyvern
Wyverns return in ARK 2 with fire lightning ice and poison variants and the wyvern trench is in the volcanic zone and you steal eggs instead of taming adults and you need to raise the baby from an egg and the imprinting process gives massive stat bonuses and the fire wyvern does burning damage over time the lightning wyvern does massive burst damage the ice wyvern slows enemies and the poison wyvern does AOE gas damage and honestly the lightning wyvern is my favorite because the damage output is just insane but the fire wyvern is probably the most versatile and the egg stealing process is still incredibly dangerous and you will die multiple times learning the trench layout and that's just part of the experience
Aquatic — The Ocean Is Terrifying and Full of Treasure
Megalodon
the Megalodon now gets a blood frenzy buff in ARK 2 where damaging a bleeding target increases its attack speed by 25 percent and damage by 15 percent for 10 seconds and it spawns everywhere in the ocean and tames with raw meat and it's the first ocean mount you should get because it's common and strong enough to handle most threats and it's actually good now with the frenzy buff
Mosasaurus
the Mosa is the king of the ocean and in ARK 2 it gets a sonar ping ability that reveals creatures in a large radius and it has a platform saddle and massive health at 3600 base and 100 base damage and it spawns in deep ocean and tames with exceptional kibble and it's incredibly hard to tame because the deep ocean is the most dangerous biome in ARK and honestly you need a small army of water mounts just to safely tame a Mosa but once you have one the ocean is yours
Plesiosaur
the Plesio is the mid tier ocean mount with a platform saddle and good speed and health and in ARK 2 it gets an echo location ability that highlights resources and caves and it spawns in deep ocean and tames with exceptional kibble and it's faster than a Mosa but less tanky and the platform saddle makes it a great mobile ocean base and honestly it's a good stepping stone to the Mosa
Basilosaurus
the Basilo is immune to jellyfish stings and squid grabs and in ARK 2 it gets a healing aura that heals nearby allied creatures by 2 percent of max health per second while in shallow water and it spawns in shallow ocean and tames passively with fish meat and its health is massive at 2400 base and it's the safest ocean mount because nothing can dismount you and honestly the healing aura makes it incredible for underwater cave runs with a group
Utility & Special Creatures — The Oddballs That Change Everything
Achatina
the giant snail passively produces Achatina paste which works as cementing paste and organic polymer over time and you tame it passively with sweet vegetable cake and it spawns in swamps and forests and it's a zero effort passive resource generator and honestly every base should have a few Achatinas because cementing paste is needed for everything and passive generation means you never have to farm chitin and stone manually and it just makes life better
Dung Beetle
converts feces into fertilizer and oil over time and in ARK 2 it's more efficient producing 2 oil and 3 fertilizer per medium feces and you tame it passively with feces and it spawns in caves and volcanic areas and it's essential for farming and passive oil production and honestly it's one of the most useful creatures in the game despite being a beetle that eats poop and that's just ARK for you
Otter
the Otter provides insulation and can carry artifacts and in ARK 2 it gets a pearl hunting ability where it occasionally finds black pearls and silica pearls while swimming and it spawns in rivers and tames passively with fish meat and its insulation buff helps in extreme temperature biomes and honestly it's cute and useful and the black pearl hunting alone makes it worth taming because black pearls are a pain to farm normally
Archaeopteryx
the glider bird that lets you glide from heights and in ARK 2 the gliding is smoother with better air control and it spawns in forests and tames passively with chitin and it's a tree dwelling glider that sits on your shoulder and honestly it's more of a fun mobility tool than a combat creature but the gliding is genuinely useful for getting down from mountains without dying
and this list is going to keep growing as Studio Wildcard reveals more creatures and ARK 2's creature count is expected to exceed ARK 1's roster with at least 176 tamable species at launch plus DLC additions later and the new creature AI system means every dinosaur behaves differently in the wild with migration patterns pack hunting territorial behavior and unique combat tactics and honestly the creature variety is what makes ARK special and ARK 2 looks like it's doubling down on everything that made the first game great while fixing the AI jank that made creatures feel robotic and predictable
